The composition of the zircon suggested to the researchers that the Earth's early growth was protracted over 100 Ma and that there must have been continental crust and water on the Earth's surface by 4300 Ma, much earlier than previously thought. However, most of the Earth's geological record extends back no more than 4000 Ma, to the end of the early intense phase of meteorite bombardment, which destroyed or reworked almost all the older material.
