Up up and away

One of the best things at a funfair, I think, is the bumper cars. You push your foot on the accelerator, the car lurches forward, and bump! You smack into someone else. Strange as it may seem there is a link between bumper cars, mountain ranges, coal, electricity and . . . insects the size of large parrots!

When you run into someone in your bumper car, you just bounce off. But if you didn't, what would happen? You've locked bumpers and you're pushing harder and harder into each other. You can't both go down, as the floor is in the way. All that leaves is for

one or both of you to tilt up. The front of the bumper cars would rise, very slowly at first, then faster, until you ended up pointing to the sky.
