An aft skirt may be attached to the vehicle, to expand its cross section and thus reduce descent rate. This approach was applied on the Venera landers, which had a sharp-edged braking disc the sharp edge providing a well-defined flow separation position which improves stability over rounded shapes. Veneras 13 and 14 also added a sawtooth edge to their landing rings to further control the flow and enhance stability. The aerodynamic properties were tested in a water tunnel and by free-flight drop tests.
The random motion of the photons in a star has steps of different length although the average step length is probably about 1 mm. The photons will take of the order of 107 years to pass from the centre to the surface. The density of material is low at the surface and the mean free path for collisions is now very large. Under these conditions the photons are essentially independent and do not collide. This region of free flight is thin and marks a clean surface to the star as seen by observers from outside.
Four other scientific payloads were attached to the ASTRO-SPAS satellite in addition to ORFEUS. The Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph (IMAPS) operated for two days during the course of the two-week-long period of free flight, observing numerous extremely bright galactic objects at high resolution. Previously flown on high-atmosphere sounding rockets and on the ORFEUS-SPAS-1 mission, IMAPS was capable of very precisely measuring the motions of interstellar gas clouds to an accuracy of 1.6 km s.
Sighting the stars was done against an illuminated graticule on which were inscribed series of patterns. A pair of cross-hairs was used when the LM was in free flight, and a pair of radial lines and spirals came into play for surface or docked alignments. In both cases, the computer was told which of the six detents the AOT was in, and which star was to be marked. To mark on a star during free flight, the LM was manoeuvred to make the star move across the X and Y cross-hairs, with marks being taken when it coincided with each line, from which the computer could define two intersecting planes whose vertex pointed to the star. A similar pair of marks on another star gave the two vectors the computer required to calculate the platform's orientation.

The penetration process can be divided conceptually into three phases initial impact, 'free flight' and the terminal phase. The initial impact may be complicated by the partial immersion of the projectile tip in the target as well as ejection of material from the target to form a crater. The second phase (which may in fact be vanishingly short in duration) is a more or less steady state (near-constant deceleration), although when shaft friction is of interest then the phase may be subdivided according to whether or not the shaft has completely penetrated. Finally, in the third phase the projectile comes to a halt. In some cases this may be indistinguishable from the free-flight phase, but in others elastic phenomena in the target lead to a final peak in the deceleration history as the target 'grabs' the projectile.
