On August 29, the Soviet Union detonates its first nuclear weapon at a secret test site in the Kazakh Desert. Code-named First Lightning (Per-vaya Molniya), the successful test breaks the nuclear-weapon monopoly enjoyed by the United States. It plunges the world into a massive nuclear arms race that includes the accelerated development of strategic ballistic missiles capable of traveling thousands of kilometers. Because they are well behind the United States in nuclear weapons technology, the leaders of the former Soviet Union decide to develop powerful, high-thrust rockets to carry their heavier, more primitive-design nuclear weapons.
