The step where RF3 comes into the terminating ribosome, however, is not clear: it is either Step 1, before the peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis, as indicated in the figure, or Step 3, after the peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis. In the latter case RF3:GTP binds transiently, hydrolyses GTP and dissociates together with the displacement of RF1 (or RF2) during Step 3 (R. H. Buckingham, G. Grentzmann & L. Kisselev, Mol. Microbiol. 24: 449-456, 1997).
