While it is true that human beings can endure brief periods of extreme heat and cold by using various kinds of protective clothing and other insulation, it is also true that there is a range of temperature that human beings prefer for their everyday existence. This is demonstrated in

Figure 2, which shows the percentages of the Earth's population living in various regions of the Earth's surface as a function of the local mean annual temperature. This illustration shows that human beings prefer to live in regions where the mean annual temperature lies between 40° F and 80°F ; essentially, the entire world's population lives in regions where the mean annual temperature is between 32°F and 86°F.
