While it is true that human beings can endure brief periods of extreme heat and cold by using various kinds of protective clothing and other insulation, it is also true that there is a range of temperature that human beings prefer for their everyday existence. This is demonstrated in
Figure 2, which shows the percentages of the Earth's population living in various regions of the Earth's surface as a function of the local mean annual temperature.
