Vaginal Process Size

The vaginal process forms part of the tympanic plate, basal to the styloid process. The position and orientation of the styloid-vaginal process are of functional significance in vocalization patterns, because it will influence the position of the hyoid bone and associated soft tissues (Aiello & Dean, 1990). The process is absent to small (= 0) in Pongo, Gorilla, Pan, Praeanthropus, P. walkeri, Australopithecus, and H. habilis, while being moderate to large (= 1) in P. robustus, P. boisei, H. ergaster, and H. sapiens (Strait & Grine, 2001).
