Summary

Some features may be seen to occur only in certain belts or zones. Features may be present during one apparition and absent the next. Some may be seldom seen, while others are almost always present. CCD images can reveal features difficult to make out with the unaided eye; or, even those that usually cannot be seen at all.

Some of Jupiter's features are so subtle that I know several experienced observers who have never made them out visually. It is important for the observer of Jupiter not to be disappointed if certain features seen previously are absent at a later date. Certainly, the absence of a feature, or type of feature, may turn out to be an important piece of data. Approach the planet with objectivity, without expectations, and every observation will be a new discovery. You will never be disappointed.
