The Slow Currents

The slow currents had all been detected and recorded by 1901 (Table 3.1). Since that time, they have shown only temporary variations in speed. The cause for the difference in speed of the nine currents is not known. The speeds do not seem to be related to the types of features that are carried along by them, nor to any jet streams around them [79].

A variety of features can be seen in these slow currents, including bright and dark spots, medium and large spots, and cyclonic and anti-cyclonic spots. Regardless of the feature seen, they all seem to move in the same slow current. In some latitudes, either bright spots or dark spots are more common [80].
