Conclusions

As argued here, we can say that the reason why the genetic code originated must be sought only in the evolution of the codification of enzymatic catalysis mediated by peptidyl-tRNA-like molecules, whose interactions, channelled and optimised by pre-mRNAs, resulted firstly in the origin of protein synthesis and finally in the origin of the genetic code through the birth of the first mRNA codifying only for precursor amino acids, as predicted by the co-evolution theory of genetic code origin. There would thus have been very little that was truly deterministic in this evolution.

Acknowledgements I wish to thank Pier Luigi Luisi and Pasquale Stano for an interesting discussion during a trip from Erice to Palermo airport. I also thank Simone Cossu for drawing the figure.
