The Neurobiological Approach

The last decades have brought a depth of understanding about the mind-brain relationship that goes beyond the more intuitive approaches of previous research. Scholars can now rely on empirical evidence from both neuroimaging and morpho-metric studies in order to elucidate brain areas, which mediate both the production and perception of music. As such, it is possible to refine the findings in three major domains: (i) localisation studies which try to find anatomical markers for musical skills; (ii) studies on the role of neural plasticity; and (iii) the search for structural and functional adaptation of the brain as the result of musical experience, both at a macrostructural and microstructural level.
