MTA industries. So far, no less than 16 different cave and rock-shelter sites have been recorded in this region in which levels of MTA (i.e. levels characterized by the presence of typical cordiform hand axes) are superimposed directly above levels of either Quina or Ferrassie type Mousterian, with as yet no well documented instance of a reversal of this stratigraphie sequence (Table 6.2: Mellars 1969, 1988, 1989c). As I have pointed out elsewhere, the probability of this strati-graphic situation arising entirely by chance, i.e. on the null hypothesis that the MTA, Ferrassie and Quina industries were distributed over the same time spans within this region, is almost nil - of the order of 1 in 30,000. Sites which contain superimposed levels of both Ferrassie and Quina Mousterian industries, although less frequent, show an equally consistent stratigraphie succession.
