With unlimited resources, a radiographic survey of skeletal remains should further include, other than the previously described skull projections, AP and lateral views of all the long bones. Even if the external features of bones may appear normal, the trabecular pattern within the metaphyses in the proximal femurs, distal radii, and calcanii can provide valuable insights into bone health. For example, fewer and thicker trabeculae may indicate osteomalacia. A lack of evidence of biomechanically influenced trabeculae suggests possible disuse osteoporosis. Increased cortical thickness under sites of muscle origins and insertions demonstrates repeated activity over a prolonged period. These data in turn will serve to direct the remainder of the imaging study.
Medical experiments were also conducted during the longer-than-normal, 10-day mission. One, the Physiological Systems Experiment (PSE), studied the effects of hormone therapy on changes in rats in the microgravity environment. ''The goal of this experiment'', said Roy Walker of designer Merck and Company of Pennsylvania, ''is to see if an experiment compound we're developing will prevent or slow osteoporosis from developing in microgravity during spaceflight. If it does, the compound may be a useful treatment for many people on Earth who suffer bone loss from being bedridden for long periods of time due to accidents or paralysis.''
Those experiments were both multidisciplinary and roughly divided into life and physical sciences. The former included studies of pulmonary and cardiovascular changes during rest and exercise and investigated bone cell activity. Dave Brown hoped the Canadian-provided bone cell experiments could yield insights into the future treatment of osteoporosis. ''That's something that's a problem for everybody when we get older, particularly women,'' he said before launch. ''It turned out that astronauts - when we go to space and no longer have the stress of gravity on our skeletons - lose calcium and so we're going to be studied for that. We're actually a very good model - a very accelerated model - for what happens to people over many years, so it's useful to study us to learn more about how to slow or prevent osteoporosis here on Earth. For each density and thickness of material, there is an optimal kVp setting. For example, on a living patient, the optimal setting would be 55 kVp for a hand and 75 kVp for a lateral skull. Pathology that alters the density of tissue would necessitate compensation in the selection of kVp. For instance, a patient with osteoporosis, a condition that decreases bone density, might require a 5 to 10 kVp reduction to produce an image with acceptable penetration. For mummified remains, 55 kVp has proved to be most suitable for adequate penetration. When viewing a processed radiograph to determine if there is adequate penetration, looking inside the bone is considered the best area for an assessment of penetration. It should be possible to see through the bone and be able to discern structures such as trabeculae (Figure 2.1A). A focal point of the rat research on SLS-1 were studies of the effect of microgravity on their muscles and bones, particularly by measuring changes in circulating levels of calcium-metabolising hormones and the uptake and release of calcium in their bodies. These changes were a cause for concern, because they appeared to be similar to those observed in human patients with osteoporosis - a condition in which bone mass decreases and bones become porous and brittle - and understanding the mechanisms responsible for them was deemed vital when planning future long-duration space station missions.

According to the authors of a study at Creighton University, a Jesuit University in Omaha, Nebraska, the risk of contracting skin cancer from sunbathing is drummed into women year after year, yet postmenopausal women who stay out of the sun increase their risk of developing breast cancer because the levels of vitamin D in their bloodstream may drop too low. Some of the deficit can be made up by taking vitamin D and calcium supplements but doing so reduces the risk at best by about a half. Calcium had been included in the tests because the study was initially aimed at osteoporosis, and calcium turned out to have some protective effect against cancer but it was not as strong as that from the vitamin.
