A frequent high school science demonstration is electrolysis of water, a schematic of which is shown in Fig. 10.8.

If the cell were operated in the equilibrium mode (i.e., if the battery voltage just balanced the cell potential), the gases would not be produced at the two platinum electrodes. The equilibrium EMF of the cell is obtained from the Nernst equations for half-cell reactions 1 and 3 in Table 10.1:
