Where S-L denotes a ligand molecule bound to a site; S connotes an empty site and L is a free ligand in solution. The empty and occupied sites are characterized by molar concentrations, just as if they were independent species in the solution. Thus if each macromolecule possesses n binding sites and the molar concentration of the macromolecule in solution is [mmtot], the total concentration of binding sites in solution is [So] = nx[mmtot]. Similarly, the concentration of bound and unbound sites are [S-L] and [S], respectively. [ ] denotes molarity. Several specific cases are considered in the following section.
