Fuel Cell Mode

The hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell has already been discussed in Sect. 10.4.3. Basically, the cathode and anode reactions (Eqs (10.17) and (10.18)) are the reverse of those for electrolysis. The overall cell reaction is also reversed to represent combination of hydrogen and oxygen according to Eq (10.16). The physical configuration of the fuel cell, however, is quite different from that of an electrolysis apparatus. In the former, the reacting gases must be accorded direct access to surfaces on which they decompose by producing or consuming hydrogen ions in the electrolyte and electrons for the external circuit. The EMF produced by the fuel cell is the reverse of that for electrolysis. In addition, the pressures of the reactant gases in the electrodes can be independently controlled, leading to:
