In the third type of operation shown in Fig., 10.2c, all current flow and both half-cell reactions are stopped by placing in the line a potentiometer or an external voltage source that just balances the electric potential produced by reaction (10.1). Because no current flows, neither of the electrodes can be labeled a cathode or an anode. This equilibrium cell provides a method for measuring the standard free-energy changes of the overall cell reaction. To this end, the cell voltage, or electromotice force (EMF), denoted by s, is measured at various cell temperatures.
